Working with Key frames in Adobe after Effects

As a beginner, working with Adobe after Effects can seem complicated. Many newcomers are scared off by its daunting user interface – looking neither like photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop or film editing suites like Apple Final Cut. So many buttons and expressions yet so little you know about them.

Don’t fear! This article is here to help you with an important part of After Effects’ workflow: the key frames in the composition window. This is what all animation in the software is based around. The purpose of this guide is focused on making you understand the concept of key frames rather than how to technically use them.

Regular, old-school animation is done by individually creating each frame by hand. For example: if you wanted a ball to bounce over screen, the animator would draw each frame – in the air, slightly closer to the ground, even more close to the ground, really close to the ground and hitting the ground. With modern motion graphics this time consuming process is no longer needed, thanks to the wonder that is key frames. A key frame is just what it sounds like: a frame that is key to the animation.

To keep the ball metaphor going, an animator working with key frames would place a key frame when the ball is at the top of the drop, and one at the bottom. The software then calculates what happens in between the different states, called twining. Using this method, we can animate position, scale, rotation, opacity; blur levels – basically anything that can have a numerical value. You can even animate distortion of clips to create funny facial expressions for example.

You can also use easing, a process when the computer calculates the speed of change between the key frames. For example, if you animate a car starting and driving away, you would want the animation to seem realistic in that the car slowly accelerates. In order to do this, you place one key frame at the start of the driving stretch and one at the end, and apply the easing. Now the car will start off slow, and finally reach its driving velocity. Combine this with key frame-animated wheels and – viola – it took you seconds to do what would have taken hour’s years ago.

Collaboration within the Nigerian Animation Industry

The Nigerian animation and visual effects industry is a young and new one. There are many people in it with lots of drive and energy. But one of the factors affecting it has been that of the establishment of proper studios and the current absence of collaborative projects between artists and technicians in the field.

Finance is a key factor, especially in Nigeria. In some countries grants and other support systems are available to support those in the creative industries. Of course the creative industries had to fight to get that. But their governments have realized that the creative industries can be a huge earner. The creative economy has been identified by the UN as one of the economies that will benefit developing countries immensely if harnessed just as it did for established economies. Unfortunately most African governments, including Nigeria’s haven’t quite realized the potential.

Most people in our fledgling animation industry are young graduates with little financial backing and no large industry to take them up and pay them a decent salary. They have to make it up as they go along. It’s not like our main established industries (law, engineering, telecoms, banking) where there are clearer entrance routes and more money to be made. We are in the pioneering phase right now. Passion can only get you so far when you have no cash (maybe I’m getting to old!)

To now dedicate your time and effort to an animation project with people just for the sake of it is hard. Don’t get me wrong, I think that is precisely what creates the best work. It’s just tough to do from a logical day to day stand point where bills have to be paid.

Disney Princess

Belle, the fictional character in Walt Disney’s 1991 animated classic “Beauty and the Beast” is one Disney’s official Princesses. She is very charming and yet such a free spirited girl. Please allow me to share some interesting and little known facts about Princess Belle with you.

There are 2 follow-up direct to Disc sequels to Beauty and the Beast in which Belle also stars. They are “Beauty and the Beast; The enchanted Christmas” and “Beauty and the Beast; Belle’s Magical World”

Did you know that Belle makes a Cameo appearance in Disney’s 1996 animated movie “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”?

When Disney animators were bringing the Belle Character to life they actually hired an actress (Sherri Stoner) as a live action model to act out various scenes that were planned in the movie. This allowed the Belle animators to gain inspiration from Stoner’s mannerisms and actions. Often when 2 or more animated Characters appear in a scene together they are drawn by separate animators. Sometime those animators are not together as they drawn the scenes. It’s only later that the characters and background are merged to form a complete scene.

The outfit that Belle wears the most in Beauty and the Beast is a blue peasant dress with a white blouse. Her outfit also has a white apron on the front. While many believe that the idea for Belle’s outfit was from Dorothy’s dress from The Wizard of Oz, it was actually created from the dress that Julie Andrews wore in The Sound of Music. The Dress that Belle is most famous for and the one she is portrayed the most in is the Golden yellow ball gown. While Belle only wears this during the Ballroom sequence with the beast, this is by far her most elegant outfit.

Belle is one of the meet able and greet-able princess characters at the Walt Disney theme parks. Most likely she will be wearing her yellow Ball gown when you meet her inside the parks.

The voice of Belle in Beauty and the Beast is from the talent of actress Paige O’Hara (born Donna Paige Helmintoller). O’Hara brings Belle to life like no other actress could. It is difficult to imagine but Belle’s voice was actually played by another Actress, Jodi Benson, for the DVD movie “House of Mouse”. Benson did the best she could but nothing compares to Belle’s original voice. Of course Robby Benson as the Voice of BEAST is irreplaceable too.
